STEM Robotics Programme Launch

On Tuesday February 11 2020, the Guyana Council of Organisations for Persons with Disabilities (GCOPD) in partnership with ExxonMobil Guyana will be launching their Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) Programme for children with disabilities.  The launch will be held at the National Library conference room (76-77 Church and Main streets Georgetown) beginning at 10:00am.  Delivering the feature address will be the minister of Public telecommunications, the honourable Katherine Hughes.  Other speakers will include the US Ambassador to Guyana, Sarah Ann Lynch, the Chairman of GCOPD, Cecil Morris and ExxonMobil Senior Director of Public and Government Affairs, Deedra Moe.

The STEM programme for children with disabilities will be piloted in four Special Education Needs (SEN) schools in Region 4.  Through the programme, the children will be exposed to the STEM subjects using robotic technology.  Additionally, the children will be taught complex concepts using the technology  which will help them to develop critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.  The programme will be implemented over a six-months period, with plans to replicate the programme in other SEN schools across Guyana.

GCOPD has recognized the continued marginalization of children with disabilities from mainstream activities and educational opportunities across all spheres of society.  To this end, the organization has ensured that the empowerment of children with disabilities was prioritized as one of its main programme areas.  This is done mainly through education, skills development and other capacity-building initiatives.

GCOPD would appreciate media coverage of this worthy event.
