On Tuesday, March 26th, 2024, GCOPD held the launch of the Special Humanitarian Project in the National Library’s Conference Room. The project is funded by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and entails the distribution of various assistive technologies catered to blind/ visually impaired persons to beneficiaries of GCOPD’s Orientation and Mobility Programme.  These technologies were on display throughout the conference and comprised of signature guides, white canes, a talking blood pressure monitor, tactile markers, braille slates, an android tablet, a talking watch and a talking thermometer.

Before the event, a mini interview was held with two of the Orientation and Mobility officers; Odessa Blair and Michelle Gouveia regarding the importance of Orientation and Mobility. Both of them stated that the Orientation and Mobility programme give persons who are blind/ visually impaired a chance to be independent and be able to navigate their environment with ease. An overview of the project and brief remarks were given at the gathering, and attendees were given the opportunity to try out the devices displayed. After the event ended, a meeting was held with the O&M officers to discuss plans for the future.
