The United Nations system in Guyana in collusion with the Guyana Council of Organizations for Persons with Disabilities (GCOPD) held a round table discussion on food security and persons with disabilities at the Guyana Industrial Training Centre.
The round table discussion was hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, with the support of the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the Guyanese government.
The discussion aimed to address the food security and malnutrition challenges faced by persons with disabilities in Guyana, and to discuss possible solutions.
The discussions involved representatives from the UN agencies, local government, the GCOPD, and other organizations, including the National Commission on Disability, and the Georgetown Public Hospital.
During the round-table discussion, participants discussed the need for policies and programs that take into account the unique challenges faced by persons with disabilities, particularly in access to food and health services.
The GCOPD and the UN agencies present also highlighted the need for inclusive and accessible food distribution systems, improved access to affordable and nutritious food options, and increased support for persons with disabilities who are vulnerable to malnutrition and hunger.
The meeting also aimed to increase awareness among stakeholders about the challenges faced by persons with disabilities in Guyana, and to promote greater inclusivity and support for persons with disabilities in the country.
