On November 17th, 2023, the Guyana Council on Persons with Disability (GCOPD) in collaboration with ExxonMobil launched the Orientation and Mobility Phase 2 Programme, aimed at enhancing the self-reliance and independence of persons with visual impairment through mobility training.
The launch event was attended by representatives of various organizations and stakeholders in the field of disability, including members of the GCOPD, ExxonMobil, and local and international non-governmental organizations. The objective of the programme is to improve the capacity of persons with visual impairment in Guyana to navigate their daily environments, enhance their independence, and reduce their reliance on others.
During the first phase of the workshop, participants were taught how to safely and efficiently use a white cane to navigate in different environments and how to identify potential barriers that may limit their ability to access public spaces. Participants were also provided with training in orientation and mobility in their local environments to improve their ability to navigate independently.
The second phase of the programme now, will involve a follow-up training that will provide participants with an opportunity to practice their newly acquired skills in a real-life environment, with ongoing support and guidance from GCOPD, ExxonMobil, and other partners.
The launch event also served as an opportunity to raise awareness of the challenges faced by persons with disabilities in Guyana and the importance of inclusivity and accessibility for all. The GCOPD expressed hope that the programme will play a critical role in promoting the independence and self-reliance of persons with visual impairment and help to create a more accessible environment in Guyana.
