The Guyana Council of Organisations for Persons with Disabilities, with funding from UNDP through the 7th Operational Phase of the GEF Small Grant Programme, commenced its “Climate -Resilient Actions for Food Security for Persons with Disabilities (CRAFS for PWDs)” programme. The main objective is to allow participants to take control of their food and financial security through training and resources in vertical farming and shade house cultivation.
The project commenced in September 2023 and encompasses a series of activities scheduled over a period of 12 months. These activities entail the construction of four shade houses, the facilitation of three (3) three-day training sessions, as well as the cultivation and harvesting of crops. Participants will have the opportunity to consume the produce grown from their efforts, with any surplus being sold for profit.
This initiative equips participants with the knowledge and skills required to establish and manage vertical farms and shade house gardens through engaging workshops facilitated by the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI). These innovative farming techniques optimize available space while minimizing physical labor, making them accessible to individuals with diverse abilities. Each participant will receive training in soil preparation, fertilizer application, crop arrangement for optimal yield, utilization of gardening tools, crop monitoring, pest and weed management, record-keeping, and crop harvesting.
Beyond the provision of technical guidance, the project fosters a supportive environment where members can exchange experiences, share ideas, and establish networks for ongoing support. By creating opportunities for food sovereignty and economic empowerment, this initiative aims to dismantle barriers and empower marginalized individuals to lead self-sufficient and fulfilling lives.
