On May 8th, 2024, the Guyana Council of Organisations for Persons with Disabilities (GCOPD) in collaboration with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, under the of the Special Humanitarian Project, (funded by the Church), distributed assistive and mobility aids to blind and visually impaired beneficiaries of the Orientation and Mobility programme.
The assortment of assistive aids included signature guides, white canes, talking watches, talking thermometers, tablets, braille slates, tactile markers, and talking blood pressure monitors. These aids will allow these persons to be more independent. The Orientation and Mobility program, integral to
the event, played a pivotal role in equipping individuals with the skills and confidence to navigate their surroundings with ease. From mastering the use of white canes to accessing information through tablets, participants were empowered to embrace independence and overcome barriers.
The collaboration between GCOPD and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints exemplified the transformative power of collective action. By combining resources, expertise, and goodwill, both organizations demonstrated a profound commitment to creating a more inclusive and compassionate society.
