UNICEF YOUTH PRE-CONSULTATION

On Thursday, April 11th, 2024, GCOPD in collaboration with the Office of the Resident Coordinator, The Guyana National Youth Council, and the Guyana Youth Environment Network with over 40 youths present.

The SIDS CYAS represents a groundbreaking opportunity for young people in SIDS to actively engage in addressing the multifaceted challenges confronting their communities. With a focus on empowering youth, the event seeks to foster innovative solutions and inclusive dialogue.

During the pre-consultation event, Guyanese youth showcased their creativity and commitment to sustainable development by proposing innovative solutions tailored to the unique needs of SIDS. From harnessing renewable energy sources to promoting mental health awareness, their discussions resonated with urgency and determination.

Of particular importance was the emphasis on ensuring that the new 10-year agenda for SIDS reflects the voices and concerns of young people, including those with disabilities. By actively involving youth in the development of this agenda, the aim is to create a more inclusive and impactful framework for sustainable development.

The insights and recommendations put forth by Guyanese youth will be collated with reports from other participating countries and presented to leaders during the 1st Ministerial Meeting of SIDS4. This collective effort will provide a robust roadmap for youth-led sustainable development initiatives across SIDS regions, ensuring that the voices of young people are heard and heeded at the highest levels of decision-making.
